Welcome, to what is possibly the most friendly community you could find yourself a part of; the cloth nappy community!
Deciding to use cloth is a conscious decision, so you should be proud you’ve made it to this article. Our aim at Pumpkin Brown is to demystify using cloth nappies...it really is not as complex and confusing as it can appear, it's all about finding the right nappies and routine for you and your baby.
Are you choosing to cloth because you want to reduce your environmental impact? Perhaps you want to reduce the long-term cost of nappies, or maybe you prefer natural fibres against baby’s skin? Thankfully, cloth meets all of these requirements and many more. Decide why you want to use cloth, it’ll help you choose a set up that’s right for you.
So How do I start?
Start with the belief that you don’t have to go all-in to begin with, take the pressure off. Even using just one or two cloth nappies a day can save up to 240 nappies a month from landfill.
Next get social, join a few nappy groups and read a few articles to get a feel of what others do – you’ll find plenty of advice!
The Pumpkin Patch on Facebook is our great community of cloth nappy parents at all different stages of cloth, so you’ll fit right in. You can start using cloth nappies from birth all the way through to potty training.
So what do I need to get started?
The Nappies - How many reusable nappies do I need?
For full time use you will need about 20 to 25 nappies depending on the age of your baby and how often you wash . We advice you to start smaller and build from there when you know what works best for you, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. We recommend starting by using them round the house to build your confidence
Nappy Bucket or Pail to store dirty nappies until wash day
Nappies Liners to line nappies and catch the poop
To make life a little easier we have put together some great starter packs that contain everything you need to get started, check them out here
